Davidson County Community College (DCCC) is a comprehensive, open admissions, public two-year college and is the only institution of higher education in Davidson and Davie counties. The college serves approximately 12,000 students each year. DCCC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
A focus on improving student success informs all that we do. For the past ten years, our college has been dedicated to comprehensively redesigning student pathways to improve retention and completion rates. As a result of being engaged in national community college reform initiatives, such as Achieving the Dream (AtD), Completion by Design (CbD), Frontier Set, and participating in an Aspen Roadmap to Excellence visit, the vision of student success at DCCC has evolved from one focused on access to one focused on equity and completion.
To support our mission, vision and values, we have identified three strategic goals with associated objectives that define our priorities and guide our direction. The 2017-2020 strategic goals are:
- Student Success through Completion—DCCC will cultivate and engage in culturally responsive practices that foster attainment of high-quality credentials and contribute to meaningful employment or successful transfer.
- Excellence in Teaching and Learning—DCCC will support the pursuit of academic excellence and optimize student learning that promotes equitable outcomes among learners from diverse backgrounds.
- Local to Global Connections—DCCC will strengthen engagement and partnerships to support local economic development and enhance global awareness.
Davidson County Community College opened in 1963 as the Davidson County Industrial Education Center. Like other industrial education centers chartered in the 1950s and consolidated under the Community College Act of 1963, this center was designed to equip adults with the skills needed to move from an agricultural to a manufacturing-based economy. When the William E. Sinclair Building opened on a 22-acre site in 1963, 125 students were enrolled in vocational and technical programs and 51 students in adult education and service programs. In 1965, the institution was chartered as Davidson County Community College (DCCC). The Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees were added to the existing Associate in Applied Science degree, diploma, and certificate offerings.
The physical footprint of DCCC has seen tremendous growth over the years. The Uptown Lexington Education Center opened in 2004, the Thomasville Education Center in 2005, and the Davie Education Center in Bermuda Run in 2008. On the Davidson Campus, the Conference Center opened in 2009, the Transportation Technology Building in 2010, and the East Carolina University dental clinic in 2014; the new Sarah and Edward Smith Health Sciences Center opens in 2018. On the Davie Campus, major expansion and renovation took place in 2008, and in 2012, an addition to the Gantt Building completed the Davie County Early College building project. Starting in 2015, through a partnership with Wake Forest Baptist Health and Davie County, DCCC began using the former Davie County Hospital for new programs in the health sciences, becoming one of the only community colleges to have access to real-life hospital space for daily classroom experiences. A gift of 183 acres of land to the college’s foundation in 2009 allows room for additional expansion.
Today, DCCC offers 45 curriculum programs that have evolved to ensure that students enter the workforce with 21st-century knowledge. In addition to a robust transfer program, DCCC has programs in such fields as advanced manufacturing and allied health. DCCC also is one of the few community colleges nationally to have a zoo and aquarium science program. Dental assisting will make its debut next year. Both the Davidson and Davie campuses are home to a successful Early College high school program; DCCC also partners with the Yadkin Valley Career Academy. Student clubs and an athletic program contribute to a vibrant campus life, while a successful international education program gives students the opportunity to both travel abroad and meet international visitors who come to DCCC.
- Average class size is 20.
- Over 500,000 students have enrolled in at least one course since 1963.
- Current enrollment in credit programs is just under 6,000.
- The college has a successful international studies agenda including study abroad opportunities.
- DCCC has over 30 active student clubs, a NJCAA athletic programs, and an active student government.
- 75% of our students receive financial aid.
- A dental clinic managed by East Carolina University is located on the Davidson County campus.
- An earned doctorate (from a regionally accredited institution) preferred or a master’s degree combined with exemplary professional experience.
- Successful administrative experience required, community college experience and teaching experience preferred.
The next president will:
- Be driven by a strong commitment to student access and success and to ensuring that those values are obvious in all programs, activities, and policies of the college.
- Be willing to take data-informed risks when necessary to accomplish the strategic goals of the college.
- Communicate and listen effectively in ways that tend to foster strong relations with faculty, staff, students, and the community-at-large so that all partners are informed about and engaged in our work.
- Be capable of developing strong leadership in teams within the faculty and staff in order to implement the goals of the college.
- Be financially competent in order to insure the college’s financial stability and, at the same time, ensure that the resources of the college are properly allocated to best encourage student success and completion.
- Have experience and skills to secure both public and private funds that are aligned with the college’s student access and success goals.
- Understand and have experience in making the case for difficult and long-term changes that are often necessary to accelerate desired student outcomes.
- Have the skills and experiences that demonstrate an ability to work in an effective governance relationship with the board of trustees.
- Have a record of demonstrated success in working with industry leaders, state and county commerce officials, and local economic development groups to promote new and expanding industry initiatives.
